Training – Open Sources

    Open Sources

The Open Sources screen is where most of the day-to-day transactions are recorded against the open sources, including usage, disposals, synthesis, and movements.

    • Open the menu, and then select the Open Sources button in the navigation bar.
    • Within the menu, select Open Sources. This opens the Open Sources screen.
    • Navigate the table and select the Example Open Source. This opens the information panel for the selected source.
    • Select View at the bottom of the panel. This opens the Single Open Source screen for the selected source.

The Single Open Source screen will display the details as entered previously.

IsoStock always applies decay correction to activities. If a date is specified (i.e., for a transaction), the decay will be calculated for that date; otherwise, it will use the current date and time. Decay is corrected to the minute on all radionuclides (even with the 5730-year half-life of Carbon 14).

The bottom half of the screen displays the Open Source Transactions table, and then the Subsamples table.

Recording Use of an Open Source

    • Select the Perform Actions button at the top of the screen. This opens a dropdown.
    • From the drop-down, select Use Compound. This opens up the Use Compound panel.
    • Set the Percent to “50”.

Some or all of the original compound can be used. If some of the compound is used, a new sub-sample will be created with its own reference code.

    • Select Submit

If a new sub-sample has been created, the page will be navigated to the Single Open Source screen for the sub-sample. The user can return to the screen for the original open source by selecting the View Parent button at the top of the screen.

Entering Open Sources without Orders or Requests

New open sources can be entered into the system (without any prior record).

    • Navigate to the Open Source screen.
    • Select Add Open Source at the top of the screen.
    • Enter details.
      • Set the Nuclide to Common Nuclide.
      • Set the Activity to “10kBq”.
      • Set the Compound to “Example Open Source 2”.
      • Set the rest of the details to typical values for your organisation.
    • Select Submit.

It is advisable to enter units that best describe the source or the way it is used. For example, if the compound is to be used in equal vials, it can be entered this way: 10 vials at 5 MBq per vial. Likewise, you should use the maximum scope available – 0.1 MBq is better entered as 100 kBq, etc.

By default, the page will be navigated to the Single Open Source screen for the newly created source.

    Note on Default Compounds
Default compounds can be configured from the Compounds options on the Setup menu. – helps users who use common compounds enter data by defaulting some of the information for them.
Information includes: supplier, catalogue code, name, radionuclide

There is no limit to the number you can enter in this list. However, the more compounds it contains, the less usable the drop-down compound selection (on requests/receive etc.) becomes.

    Disposing of an Open Source

    • From the Single Open Source screen for the newly created Example Open Source 2, select Perform Actions.
    • From the drop-down, select Dispose Compound. This opens up the Dispose Compound panel.

Often, a compound will be disposed of by several methods simultaneously – for example, part liquid to the drain and part solid to a bin or bag. As a result, multiple disposals can be recorded against the same compound in a single entry.

The disposal routes are configured for individual sites and can be selected from a drop-down menu. Routes may include drain, fume hoods or several different waste containers. As with the “Use” option, you can enter a quantity, decay-corrected activity, or percentage.

    • Enter the details, disposing 20% to the drain and 1kBq to a new container. (The type of the container is specific to your organisation.)
    • Select Submit.

When selecting a route with a waste reference, selecting the “” button allows the waste details to be edited.

If a new waste reference is selected, the new waste container will be created and allocated a unique reference code upon submission of the disposal. A pop-up will appear on the screen, notifying the user of the newly created reference for the created container.

The Open Source Transactions table will now display two additional transactions related to the disposals that were just created.
